In February’s “Family Counselor,” Dr. William B. Knippa stated that “We affirm in the Apostles’ Creed our belief in ‘God, the Father almighty, creator of heaven and earth, and of all things visible and invisible.’” His reference is from the Nicene Creed, not the Apostles’ Creed.
Since so many people are only too willing to start a new division over just a few words, it behooves us to be very accurate when quoting anything in terms of doctrine. Actually, the Lutheran Service Book is incorrect in stating the title as “Nicene Creed.” It is actually the LCMS revision of the Council of Constantinople revision of the creed approved by the Council of Nicaea–but that is probably nit-picking. Our form agrees more closely with the form of the Roman Church than with the form used in the Orthodox Church.
But I doubt that it is nit-picking to point out the difference between the Apostles’ and Nicene Creeds.
