Thank you for all the articles in the January Lutheran Witness issue calling attention to the 40th anniversary of the Roe v. Wade U.S. Supreme Court decision. I especially liked the Rev. Dr. Peter Scaers encouragement for us Christians to speak up.

Regarding the January 2013 issue of The Lutheran Witness devoted to the topic of abortion, I was disappointed at not finding any mention of pregnancies that are life-threatening to the mother. Surely the LCMS wouldn’t advise a woman with an ectopic pregnancy, for example, to bleed to death rather than
follow her doctor’s advice to allow the fetus to be removed.

After receiving the January Lutheran Witness, I could not put it down until I finished reading the whole magazine. I noticed you left out one thing. Where are all the men that impregnate these women? They are the silent partners in an abortion. How many of them stay around to support the mother and child? The woman again is alone to shoulder the responsibility. Men need to step up and take responsibility as Joseph did for Mary.

Thank you for the outstanding January issue “Our Littlest Neighbor.” For too long our church has failed to speak boldly in defense of the unborn. The articles fit a real need in our church. They were direct yet filled with love, simple without being simplistic. Peter Scaer’s article in particular was prophetic speech to a slumbering synod. I am proud to have The Lutheran Witness as the flagship publication of our church.
